Isolation and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Bacteroides fragilis

Abstract
Fify Bacteroides fragilis strains were isolated from hospital patients and characterized on the antimicrobials. All the isolates were resistant bo bile, utilized sucrose and maltose, and did not produce indole and nitrate reductase. Five isolates
did
not produce catalase and four isolates were weak in the susceptible to metronidazole, imipenem, chloramphenicol and cefoxitin. Also ninety-two percent fo the strains were resistant to cefamandole, 84% to tetracyline, 80% to tetracycline, 80% to
penicillin G, 56% to piperacillin and 6% cefotetan. The ranges of the minimal inhibitory concentrations of the penicillin G appeared to be 8 to 256§¶/ml, those of clindamycin 0.5 to 128§¶/ml, those of cefoxitin 4 to 16§¶/ml, and those of
piperacillin
and cefotaxime 1 to 256§¶/ml. Ninty-six percentages of the strains produced ¥â-lactamase. The rates of resistance were 18% between cefotaxime and ceftazidime. Multidrugs resistance were observed 4% of isolates to 7 drugs, 4% to 6 drugs, 12% to 5
drugs
and 50% to 3 drugs.
